Best Time to Visit Caves of Drach — Month-by-Month Guide

The Caves of Drach are open year-round, and unlike many outdoor attractions, the experience underground doesn’t change with the weather outside. But the experience at the surface — the crowds at the entrance, the wait times, the heat of the walk from the car park, the coach queue — varies enormously by month. This guide covers exactly when to visit and why.

The Sweet Spots: April–May and September–October

If you have flexibility on when to travel to Mallorca, these four months are consistently the best balance of pleasant conditions and manageable crowds at the Caves of Drach.

Why April–May works:

  • Mallorca’s spring wildflowers are at their peak — the drive to Porto Cristo is genuinely beautiful
  • Air temperatures around Porto Cristo sit at 18–24°C: comfortable for a half-day excursion without the summer heat
  • The caves have resumed their full daily schedule after the winter reduction but haven’t yet hit peak-season crowds
  • Accommodation prices across Mallorca are 30–50% lower than July–August

Why September–October works:

  • Peak summer crowds have passed but the caves remain on full schedule
  • Sea temperatures are at their warmest (the Mallorca coast stays swimmable into late October)
  • Guided tour availability is high and prices are lower than summer
  • The east coast towns — Porto Cristo, Cala Millor, Cala d’Or — are more relaxed and less crowded

High Season: June–August

This is when most package holiday visitors are in Mallorca, and it shows at the Caves of Drach. Expect:

  • Multiple concert sessions per day — the cave runs performances at more frequent intervals to process larger visitor numbers (which is actually an advantage: more time slots to choose from)
  • Coach queues and parking pressure — if driving independently, arrive at least 30 minutes before your intended entry time in July–August
  • Advance booking strongly recommended — popular guided tour time slots (especially morning departures) can sell out several days in advance in peak summer
  • Temperatures outside — 30–38°C in July–August means the walk from the car park to the cave entrance is hot. The cave itself remains a constant 18–21°C, which visitors in August often describe as the most physically pleasant part of the day.

Despite the crowds, summer is not a bad time to visit — it’s simply a busier one. The concert and boat ride are just as extraordinary on a Tuesday in August as they are in May. The key is booking ahead.

Shoulder Season: March and November

March and November sit between the winter reduced-schedule and the spring/autumn sweet spots. The caves are open throughout (the Caves of Drach have only ever closed temporarily for maintenance), but:

  • Fewer daily sessions (check the official schedule for exact times)
  • Some guided tour operators run reduced frequency in March and November
  • Mallorca is quieter — many restaurants and shops in Porto Cristo are still closed or on reduced hours in early March
  • Weather on Mallorca can be unsettled: rain and cloud are more common than in April

That said, March and November visitors often have the best access to the caves themselves — smaller groups, more time at the lakeside, and guides who can take questions at the concert.

Winter: December–February

The caves operate in winter, but on a reduced schedule — typically one or two sessions per day rather than the six or more in peak summer. The main considerations:

  • Check the exact winter schedule in advance — it changes year to year and the website is the authoritative source
  • Mallorca in winter is quieter than most people expect — accommodation is available and cheap, and the island has its own quiet appeal outside peak season
  • Guided tours from resorts may be less frequent — some operators run winter cave tours only on specific days of the week; verify before booking

For visitors who are wintering in Mallorca or combining a cave visit with other east coast activities, a December or January visit is perfectly possible — you just need to plan around the reduced schedule.

Which Day of the Week?

The Caves of Drach are open seven days a week throughout the main season. Weekends in summer attract slightly more independent visitors (families with children, Mallorca residents on day trips) while weekday crowds tend to be more heavily weighted toward resort coach tours.

In practical terms, weekdays are marginally less crowded in high season — but the difference is less pronounced than the month-to-month variation. Don’t rearrange your holiday around visiting on a Wednesday versus a Saturday; focus instead on booking your preferred time slot in advance.

First Session or Last Session?

First session of the day (typically 10:00 or 10:30):

  • Gets coach tour groups before they’ve had time to reorganise from breakfast
  • Can be crowded if multiple operators send coaches to the same first slot
  • You get the lakeside amphitheatre at its quietest atmospheric moment — early light through the cave entrance is unusual and beautiful
  • Best for photographers: fewer people in the amphitheatre

Last session of the day (typically 16:00 or 17:00):

  • Coach groups have usually headed back to resorts by mid-afternoon
  • Often the least crowded session of the day in summer
  • Risk: if you’re on a guided tour, your guide needs to return to the resort before dark, so last-slot tours are less common

Mid-morning sessions (11:00–12:00): most popular with coach tours — if crowd avoidance is a priority, avoid the 11:00 slot in July–August.
